TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Nahdalatul Ulama (PBNU) Chairman Said Aqil Siraj was perplexed by the current condition shown by Indonesia’s Muslim community which he deemed “aggressive” and “radical”, which is far from the Indonesian Islam that he knows.
“There is something strange, they have become more aggressive, radical, and fails to show the true side of Indonesian Muslims,” said Said at his office on Wednesday evening.
He recalled reading an idea of establishing a caliphate in Southeast Asia by the year 2024, which he urged people to avoid.
Two major Muslim organizations in PBNU and PP Muhammadiyah agreed to maintain the unity of Indonesia’s Muslim community, which Said Aqil Siraj asserts will further promote a tolerant and forgiving Islam in Indonesia.
“Let us all preserve [the peace] because a civil war may erupt if peace isn’t preserved,” said Said Aqil Siraj.
Said did not elaborate its source and where he read about the caliphate idea but maintained that the caliphate-dream of some people has actually been promoted since a long time, one of it is the disbanded Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI).
