TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Air pollution is reportedly causing respiratory disease that leads to the death of seven million people worldwide per year, according to the new report of the World Health Organization or WHO.

As quoted from Dailymail.co.uk on Oct 28, WHO revealed that more than 90 percent of the world's population suffers toxic air pollution, and that caused a drastic effect on the health of people, especially children.

WHO director Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the toxic air pollution that the public has to suffer is a silent public health emergency. He considered air pollution as tobacco.

“No one, rich or poor, can escape air pollution. It is a silent public health emergency,” said Tedros.

Presently, about three hundreds million people living in places where the pollution rate is six times above the international standard, WHO reported.

Dr. Maria Neira, WHO director for public health and the environment, as quoted from Dailymail.co.uk further said, “We have to ask what are we doing to our children, and the answer I am afraid is shockingly clear: we are polluting their future, and this is very worrying for all us.”
