VP Kalla Highlights Numerous Construction Accident in Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Depok - Vice President Jusuf Kalla argues that the work-related accidents that have plagued Indonesia`s construction projects could also be caused by the worker`s lack of skill. He referred to the past month that saw four accidents involving public infrastructure constructions.
“What is wrong? This means that we lack the skills needed in the work area,” said Jusuf Kalla at The National Consultative Council on Education and Culture today, Feb. 7.

According to the vice president, the lack of certified construction workers in the country’s infrastructure development can be caused by the absence of skill-based education at vocational high schools (SMK) and secondary technical schools (STM).
Perlunya sertifikasi untuk pekerja pembangunan infrastruktur penting diberlakukan, karena dengan adanya program percepatan pembangunan Pemerintah maka pekerjaan pembangunan infrastruktur juga semakin bertambah.
The need for certified construction workers is essential to support the government’s development acceleration program that has increased recently. Jusuf Kalla also criticized the theoretical teaching system, instead of practice, at vocational schools.
Related to the recent accidents, Jusuf Kalla has asked the Public Housing and Public Works Minister Basuki Hadimuljono to evaluate every construction projects that are currently ongoing throughout the country.
