NU, Muhammadiyah Urge UN to Put Rohingya Crisis to an End

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Two largest Islamic organizations in Indonesia, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah, urged the United Nations (UN) to intervene and end the brutality of Myanmar military against Rohingya ethnic.
"The UN has to intervene and demands an end to cruelty against Rohingya ethnic," NU Executive Council chairman Saifullah Yusuf said in Surabaya on Friday, September 1.
Saifullah Yusuf, who is also East Java Deputy Governor, stated that the criminal acts committed by Myanmar military including killing, raping, and abusing Rohingya ethnic group are violations against human rights. Gus Ipul, as he is usually called, categorized the actions of Myanmar military as a genocide.
In addition, he said, as a country with the largest Muslim population in the world, Indonesia needs to take part in saving Rohingya ethnic. "To all Muslims in Indonesia and the world, let’s unite, pray, and offer moral support to our fellow Rohingya Muslims," Gus Ipul said.
In addition, Muhammadiyah chairman Bahtiar Effendi said that if we let Myanmar crisis slide, it will threaten the security stability in South East Asia. Humanity crisis suffered by Rohingya ethnic will trigger revolt against Myanmar, human trafficking, and illegal immigrants that can occur in the surrounding areas.
