TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Maritime and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti called on the society to understand that Indonesia`s ocean is a legacy for the upcoming generations, which is why she urged people to preserve it.
“The ocean must be preserved from generation to generation. It is in fact not owned by us, but it is a legacy from our ancestors to us. And, therefore, we must pass on the legacy to our grandchildren,” said Minister Susi Pudjiastuti in a press release received today, maintaining that Indonesia’s future lies in its ocean.
She said that 85 percent of Indonesia is covered by water. “So it is these waters that should become our source of life,” said the minister.
Furthermore, Susi Pudjiastuti said that people need to reduce the use of disposable plastic products that pose a real threat to the environment and its ecosystem.
“It is predicted that Indonesia is the world’s second largest contributor for marine plastic waste, which excludes other types of wastes. We must remember that plastic waste is not degradable in the next 450 years,” Minister Susi Pudjiastuti asserted.
