TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Indonesia Osama bin Mohammed Abdullah Al Shuaibi said the leader of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), Rizieq Shihab, was not a dangerous figure. Therefore, the accusation saying that the Saudi government was afraid of Rizieq was baseless.
“I'd like to say that Rizieq is a Muslim, he is an Indonesian citizen who is currently on the spotlight of the governments of Indonesia and Saudi Arabia,” Osama said at a press conference at the Muhammadiyah Da’wah Center Building, Jakarta, Tuesday, November 13.
According to Osama, if Rizieq committed a violation, the government of Saudi Arabia must have been taking action.
“I think Habib Rizieq is not a dangerous figure. If he has committed a violation, of course, the legal proceedings have been carried out as in Saudi or in Indonesia. But, Habib Rizieq has no problems both in Saudi Arabia and in Indonesia,” he said.
Rizieq has been staying in Saudi Arabia since a year ago. He went there when he was dragged into a case of alleged pornography at the end of April 2017. Until now, he has not returned to Indonesia.
The Indonesian police have set Rizieq as a suspect in the case in May 2017. The police have also issued an Order for Termination of Investigation (SP3) for the case.
On November 5, Rizieq Shihab was reportedly detained by the Saudi Arabia police for allegedly installing a black flag bearing the words of Tawheed on the wall of his residence. He denied the allegation and considered that someone manipulated this case and intentionally placed the flag at his residence.
