TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno invites Betawi artists to enliven the 2018 Asian Games by welcoming the athletes who will compete.
“Prepare the Palang Pintu (Door Cross) using English, Italian,” Sandiaga said, Sunday, July 22. Palang Pintu is the name of Betawi martial art that is usually served to welcome guests.
This year is the 8th Betawi Pencak Silat Festival since 2011. Besides Sandiaga, there was the Deputy Chairman of Jakarta Legislative Council Abraham Lunggana (Lulung) and Head of Department of Youth and Sports Ratiyono.
Sandiaga said the Asian Games event could be a momentum to promote Betawi culture. He also reminded the public to continue to preserve the sport of martial arts so as not to end up being just history.
“Map the local martial arts, do not let it extinct. Pencak Silat can be a creative economy,” Sandiaga said.
Sandiaga Uno also hopes the younger generation is increasingly interested to learn martial arts. If they do not, said Sandiaga, the original Indonesian sport can be controlled by foreigners. “Our rivals are heavy, there are Vietnam and Malaysia, Pencak Silat must rise, Pencak Silat must become the champion,” he said.
