TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The General Election Commission (KPU) is set to utilize a specially assigned information system (Silon) enabling them to detect whether a former convict is listed as legislative candidates for the 2019 Legislative Election.
“The Silon is able to detect a former corrupter that is in the list. Files from names that are related to past corruption, drug violations, and child-related crimes will not be processed,” said KPU Commissioner Hasyim Asyari in Jakarta on Wednesday, July 4.
Hasyim revealed that KPU has started a partnership with several law enforcement agencies such as the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and the National Police to assist in the legislative candidate’s background check.
Names of legislative candidates that are involved in a criminal case regulated under KPU Decree No. 20/2018 will show up in the system.
“The person’s file will then be returned to the political party and will be replaced with another candidate,” said Asyari.
He urges political parties to conduct a thorough background check against its candidates before the names are submitted to the KPU. The commission is set to open the submission period for the 2019 general elections from July 4 to July 17 and will be officially named as candidates on September 20.
