TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Bank Workers Union`s Communication Network (Jarkom SP Perbankan) plans to stage a rally demanding an increase in sectoral wage (UMS). Nineteen bank workers unions from Jakarta and other cities will take part in the demonstration tomorrow.
Bank Danamon Indonesia’s workers union chairman Abdoel Mujib said the unions are demanding a sectoral wage increase of 30 percent.
"Because for the longest time, bank workers unions have not been fighting for this--and it resulted in the low salaries that bank workers are being paid,” he said in Jakarta, Thursday, Feb. 22.

Abdul said that in some places, bank workers are being paid lower wages than retail store employees.
In Depok, the sectoral wage for the banking and trade services industries is pegged at Rp3.69 million per month. The figure is lower than the minimum wage of workers in modern markets, supermarkets and hypermarkets, which is set at Rp3.98 million per month.
Bank Permata’s workers union chief Prana Rifsana said bank employees deserve a wage increase considering the fact that the sector contributes largely to the national economy. Additionally, bank workers have considerably high risks that they must bear.
