TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Koran Tempo Editor in Chief Budi Setyarso said that the news reports on the electronic ID or e-KTP graft have gone through intense scrutiny before it gets published.
His statement is a direct response to the letter of complaint submitted to the Press Council by a sub-organization of Golkar Party, Sentral Organisasi Karyawan Swadiri (SOKSI).
“Our standard procedure is to check and re-check,” Budi explained through a text message on Tuesday, October 10.

SOKSI submitted a formal complaint against Tempo to the Indonesian Press Council for allegedly violating the ethics of journalism in reporting the high-profile e-KTP graft case. SOKSI suspected that there are three violations in Tempo’s reporting that they consider biased against Golkar Chairman Setya Novanto, such as the violation of the presumption of innocence, as well as biased and unverified reporting.
Budi explained that the editorial staff at Koran Tempo had already attempted to obtain clarification from Setya Novanto, even by sending a formal letter to Setya. He asserted that the report made by Tempo did not mean to attack Setya Novanto personally. “What we did is write a news for the interest of the public that was harmed by the e-KTP corruption and is not meant to personally attack any individual,” said Budi Setyarso.
SOKSI Chairman Erwin Ricardo Silalahi also questioned the appropriateness of Budi’s tweet that said “G30Setnov”. Budi responded by stating, ”Every report made by Koran Tempo is produced through editorial meetings, not by an individual such as an Editorial in Chief,” said Budi.
