TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Bangka Precinct Police arrested an anti-illegal tin mining activist, Tubagus Budhi Firbany, in Bandung. Budi had been in police’s wanted list for more than two years.
Budhi’s lawyer Ecy Tuasikal said that Budhy was arrested for protesting illegal tin mining activities in Bangka Island. In January 2015, a clash between Sungailiat fishermen and mining workers broke out. Ecy explained that the rejection was caused by the fact that the illegal mining activities damaged the environment.
“Bangka is the largest tin producer,” Ecy said at in Jakarta today, Sept. 21. He alleged that there was a plot to criminalize his client.
Budhy is charged with a violation of Article 335 paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code on unpleasant acts. He was accused of bringing a gun, sharp weapon, and leading an armed protest.
On September 5, the anti-illegal tin mining activist was transferred from the Bangka Police Detention Center to the Buket Semut Correctional Facility in Sungailiat, Bangka Island.
