TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - 153 professors and lecturers from several universities in Indonesia agreed to support and protect the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) from attacks that has targeted the anti-corruption agency. House of Representative’s right of inquiry is also considered as a threat against KPK.

“Professors in the field of anti-corruption from several universities around Indonesia declared their support for KPK,” said Prof. Dr. Muhadjir Darwin from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) on Monday, June 19.

The professor argues that the public movement in fighting against corruption has become even stronger ever since the House of Representatives (DPR) issued a right of inquiry against KPK for processing corruption cases in the DPR.

Muhadjir explained two serious flaws in the DPR which crystalized their support for KPK. The first was when the DPR showed their support for National Mandate Party founder, Amien Rais, after his name was actually mentioned in a prosecutor’s charge during a corruption trial. The second reason was when Amien Rais accused KPK of being a rotten agency.

“If DPR’s inquiry against KPK is continued, I presume that KPK would receive even greater support and spark a trust issue against the country’s high state agencies,” said Prof. Dr. Muhadjir Darwin.

He reminded members of DPR that the political parties and its politicians will feel the negative effect during the 2019 general election, where public trust will surely diminish.
