TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A joint team comprising Sulawesi Law Enforcement Agency Region III (Gakkum), Gorontalo Nature Conservation Agency (BKSDA) and the police, assisted by Wildlife Crime Unit (WCU), has arrested a wildlife trafficker in Gorontalo.
Wildlife Trade Program Manager Dwi Adhiasto in a written statement received today by Antara said that 15 animals were confiscated, namely three sulphur-crested cockatoo (Cacatua galerita), one yellow-crested cockatoo (Cacatua sulphurea), seven black-capped lory (Lorius lory), a rainbow lorikeet (Trichoglossus haematodus) and three chattering lory (Lorius garrulous).
The suspect has violated Law No. 5/1990 on Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation, which carries a sentence of up to 5 years in prison and Rp100 million in fines.
Dwi Adhiasto said that the suspect has long trafficked birds in Gorontalo. He also sold wildlife online which is hard to track. He has called on the people who are aware of wildlife trafficking on social media to file a report with local authorities, such as the police and BKSDA.
