TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X said that he plans to issue a regulation on ride-hailing companies.

“If one pay taxes the other must also pay taxes,” the Sultan told Tempo at Yogyakarta gubernatorial office on Saturday, March 18, 2017.

Earlier, conventional public transport companies protested against ride-hailing companies offering two-wheeled and four-wheeled services in Yogyakarta.

Tempo gathered that Transportation Ministry’s regulation on ride-hailing companies will be effective in April 2017.

The Sultan said that gubernatorial regulation will apply before the Transportation Ministry issues the regulation, adding that Yogyakarta may issue the regulation next week.

However, he said that Yogyakarta will not ban ride-hailing companies. “Who said I will ban online-based taxi [services]? The most important thing is to be fair to all,” he said.

Yogyakarta Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) deputy speaker Arif Noor Hartanto said that he will monitor the issuance of the gubernatorial regulation on ride-hailing companies in case it causes new problems. “People reserve the rights to provide public transport services in accordance with the applicable rules,” he said.

Arif said that after a meeting with the DPRD, ride-hailing company Go-Jek has agreed to follow the rules so long as it is allowed to operate. He said that Yogyakarta administration needs to listen to Go-Jek’s aspiration.
