TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The light of Palestine-Israel peace at the end of the tunnel is getting dimmer, and will probably die out for a long time.
There is almost nothing that can be hoped after on Tuesday last week, the Knesset, the Israeli parliament, passed the bill that legalize the annexation of lands owned by the Palestinians to make way for the building of Jewish settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
The law, which is effect retrospectively, does guarantee financial compensation or land on other locations to the Palestinian people who were are evicted from their own lands.
However, it can be ensured that the annexation of land that is legalized by the state will finally torpedo the spirit of peace talk, that basically discusses the division of Palestine-Israel lands after the 6-day war in 1967.
Under the new law, later on Palestinian negotiators will witness how the land they fought for to establish a free Palestinian country will gradually change face into a series of Jewish settlements.
There are currently 600,000 Jewish people that settle in 140 settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
With this new law, the number of settlers will certainly increase and the complication of conflicts will be even harder to ease.
The peace talk will not be effective if the building of Jewish settlements continues.
Based on the that view, the international community, the European Union, the United Nations, and Israel’s allies without exception, have regretted, even condemned the development that will hinder the Palestine-Israel peace prospect.
Israel itself is not really disturbed by this reaction because his closest and biggest ally the United States, which is now under the leadership of President Donald Trump, does not have any objection at all.
If such a condition persists, the way to star the peace talk over that has stalled since 2013 has closed.
And the horizontal Palestinian-Jewish conflict in occupied territories will get worse.
The era of Obama hat boosted the issuance of Security Council Resolution 2334, that condemns Jewish settlement while showing a violence of an international law and hinders peace process, has ended.
Now the United States is like a big brother who protects his little brother Israel without conditions and both have isolated themselves from the international community.
There is no other choice, the international community, including Indonesia must immediately prevent the implementation of law on the new settlements that is against international laws,
In order to prevent radicalization in the occupied territories, the lawyers can file this violation of international law to the International Criminal Court.
It is time that the international pressure has to be harder than the pressure form Israeli ultranationalist politicians who indeed do not want the Israel-Palestine peace.
