TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto has confirmed that the government is planning a regulation on fines for and deletion of fake news contents.
“Yes, there will be rules about them,” Wiranto told reporters at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday, January 10, 2017.
Earlier, Presidential chief of staff Teten Masduki said that the government takes the spread of fake news on both mass media and social media seriously. He said that the government will impose fines against those facilitating the spread of hoaxes, including social media platform Facebook.
On the punishment, Teten said that the government will follow Germany’s lead in tackling fake news problem. The former anti-graft activist said that the punishment will not end with a fine as fake news must be deleted within 24 hours.
Wiranto added that the regulation on fines for fake news content will kick off together with the establishment of the National Cyber Agency.
