Jokowi Opens Golkar Party`s Extraordinary National Congress

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla attend the extraordinary national congress of the Golkar Party held at Nusa Dua Convention Center in Bali on Saturday.

"The President opened the congress at 8 pm local time,” said Deputy Chairman of the Congress Committee Tantowi Yahya.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Regional Committee Ketut Sudikertas said that it is estimated that around 4,000 party cadres from all over the country came me to Bali to attend the congress.

"They have been in Bali since Thursday,” he added.

In the meantime, Andi Sinulingga, Secretary of the Committee of the Congress said that the event held on 14-16 May and the voting, which is to be held on Monday would adopt a closed voting mechanism.

He added that that the first stage, eight candidates must garner 30 percent of the 583 voters in order to move to the next round.

For the record, President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo has long announced that he did not support a certain candidate to become chairman of the party.

Presidential spokesperson Johan Budi S.P said that President Jokowi only hopes that internal problems within the party could be settled at the congress.
