TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ombudsman Indonesia has issued a recommendation to delay the use of cantrang fishing gear which was originally set by the Maritime and Fishery Ministry. This recommendation is planned to be used to sue the regulation to the Supreme Court.
“We will discuss it again with the people of Pantura and the surroundings. The regulation will be taken to the Supreme Court,” member of the Parliament’s Fishery Commission Firman Soebagyo told Tempo on Sunday, July 5.
Firman said the commission plans to initially summon Maritime and Fishery Minister Susi Pudjiastuti to discuss the continuation of the regulation.
“The minister is reckless is establishing a regulation. Why should we wait for her?” said Firman.
According to Firman, the ban on cantrang that is set in the Minister Regulation KP No.2 Year 2015, was not created with careful considerations. Susi’s reason that mentioned the device not being environmental friendly can be countered, if compared to a trawl, the destructive force of a trawl is not that big.
“Susi has never been out in the field and her statement is not backed by a strong scientific studies,” said the Golkar politician. Therefore, this regulation should be canceled.
