TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Researchers from the University of Wollongong, Australia, conducted a research at Ciliwung River to monitor the river’s water level. The research was in collaboration with the Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency and aimed at mapping floods in Jakarta digitally.
One of the researchers, Etienne Turpin, said monitoring the Capital’s biggest and longest river was important to address the flooding problem in Jakarta.
“It’s not just watching the environmental condition around the river, but also calculating the depth,” Turpin said on Friday, November 28, 2014.
The researchers, according to Turpin, were shocked when they saw the river packed with trashes. The fact showed that waste management along the river was very poor.
Another researcher, Tomas Holderness added that the flood mapping could be utilized to compare the river condition in the future.
“The system we built serves a function to provide direct information for reporting,” Holderness said.
