TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Directorate General of Regional Autonomy of the Domestic Ministry Djohermansyah Djohan claimed that the government will not withdraw the discussion on Regional Election Draft Bill. "The House knows no 'carry over'. If it is not completed now, we will have to restart it," said Djohermansyah.
Djohermansyah added that the preparation for the draft bill began in 2010. "If we start over, how many years will we have to spend? Has the new government prepared it?" he said. Moreover, Djohermansyah said that in 2015, around 204 regional heads will have ended their terms. "Regional Election 2015 should already apply the new legislation," he said.
In a prior discussion of the draft bill, six factions, notably from Merah Putih Coalition, oppose direct Regional Election. On the other hand, the National Awakening Party (PKB), National Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), and the People’s Conscience Party (Hanura) all follow the government. Democrat, as the government party, remains consistent to reject direct Regional Election, citing to save budget and avoid money politics.
