TEMPO.CO, Cairo - Escalating number of attacks in the Gaza Strip have prompted Egypt to propose a ceasefire followed by talks between Israel and Palestine in Cairo.
According to Egyptian state news agency MENA, Egypt's proposal, which took effect at 02.00 a.m. local time, calls for a ceasefire in within 12 hours after the proposal has been submitted followed by negotiations between both sides in Cairo within 48 hours.
An Egyptian foreign ministry spokesman told Egyptian state television that the country would seek supports from the Arab League countries for this proposal.
So far, the international calls for a ceasefire have had little effect and there were no signs of both sides putting their arms down.
Previously, Egypt had experienced a 30-years long conflict with Israel in the late 1940's, which ended when Egypt's third president Anwar Sadat, risked his life to reconcile the two states by signing a peace treaty at Camp David in September 1978.
