TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Confederation of Indonesian Worker’s Union (KSPI) has said that the labors will voice their support towards a particular presidential candidate on the Labor's Day (May Day). It added the support was expected to be able to help their preferred candidate thrive the presidential election on July 9.
KSPI President Said Iqbal said the decision to direct their support towards their preferred presidential candidate was not merely based on his popularity or wealth. "Our support goes to a candidate that is assertive and committed to providing the best policy for labors," he said.
He said some of the demands they wanted to convey to the presidential candidate were the 30 percent increase of their minimum salary, pension, the elimination of outsource work scheme, the provision of public transport, affordable housings, and education. Said said the labors hoped these issues could be resolved gradually during the first two years of the new government.
Said added the labors would stage a massive rally on May Day in Jakarta and other cities to voice their demands. " The commemoration of the May Day in Jakarta will focus on the Presidential Palace. We are also set to hold the May Day Fiesta at Gelora Bung Karno, which will be attended by around 120,000 labors from Jakarta and its outskirts," he said.
