TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - The families of the Cebongan Prison shooting victims will not attend the sentencing hearing of the defendants. The families argued that the trial process was unfair, and that there were many irregularities.
"It doesn't matter whether or not we come to court," Victor Manbait, the older brother of one of the victims, Juan Manbait told Tempo Wednesday, September 4.
He said the victims' families are planning to take the case into an international forum after the court made its verdict. The decision, he added, was made because the families have no trust left in the Cebongan trial process. However, he Victor said they will wait for the court's sentence before seeking legal help from international institutions.
Hillarius Ngaji Merro, Chairman of the Flores, Sumba, Timor and Alor Society (Flobamora), supported the victims' family plan. The families, he said, may request assistance through non-governmental organizations that focus on human rights issues.
