TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton confirmed that deposed Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi was "well" after the two met for two hours, Monday, July 29, 2013.
The meeting was Morsi's first contact with the outside world since he was ousted in a military coup on July 3, 2013.
In a press conference on Tuesday, July 30, 2013, Ashton stated, "Morsi has access to information, in terms of TV, newspapers, so we were able to talk about the situation."
She refused to reveal the substance of their conversation to reporters, saying "I told him that I was not going to represent his views." Morsi has been held incommunicado since the military ousted him.
