TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The archaeologists’ team has found an ancient Mayan civilization which had been buried for centuries in Mexico's rainforest. The team leader, a Slovenian professor of Academy of Sciences and Art, Ivan Spranjc said the buried city is called 'Chactun' means red stone or big stone.
The scientist expects that the finding can be the source of new information for the Mayan disappearance thousands years ago. They found 15 pyramids, fields, plazas, and other buildings depicting Mayan characters.
The Mayans who lived in the region were estimated to reach 40,000 people during 600 to 900 A.D. Spranjc said the team found the city through an aerial photograph. They spent six weeks to explore the trace. Spranjc further stated they have found evidence that shows a visit was made to the site some decades ago.
"We saw trees that were cut," said the scientist. According to him, the evidence has never been revealed. He hopes that the findings will lead to the discovery of Mayan existence in other places.
