TEMPO.CO, Washington - President Barack Obama claimed that the United States has evidence that Syria is using chemical weapons. This prompted the Washington to "rethink the range of options" regarding its strategy in Syria.
In a press conference at the White House on Tuesday, April 30, Obama said the Pentagon and other security agencies are preparing for possible (military) action if the "red line" of chemical weapon use had indeed been crossed..
"What we now have is evidence that chemical weapons have been used inside of Syria, but we don't know how they were used, when they were used, who used them," he said.
The Assad government has been accused of using weapons loaded with nerve agents against targets in civilian areas during the country's two-year-long conflict.
In early 2012, Obama said, he had instructed the Pentagon, the US military and other intelligence officials to prepare for any options available. However, did not elaborate on the details of those options.
