TEMPO.CO, Boston – An explosion stopped Boston Marathon runner number 19793 inches away from the finish line. She and dozens of other runner fell to the ground. A few seconds later, a second explosion occurs.
Steve Silva, producer of Boston.com, was standing near the finish line to capture photos of the iconic race. He was taking pictures when the race - that should have been a happy moment, turned into a bloody incident. His camera keeps on rolling during the chaos.
He described that everything happened so fast. “It happens immediately, people were injured, right in the middle of the crowd. I saw dismembered body parts, I saw blood everywhere," Silva said.
The spectators’ smiles and laughters turned into fearful faces. People ran to all directions, trying to save their lifes. The situation got even worse when the second bomb exploded 12 seconds afterwards.
Rescue teams rushed to the scene trying to save the victims with stretchers and wheelchairs, while ambulances lined up several blocks from the location. “It is not safe to be here right now,” said a police officer who instructed people to step aside.
Jim Bardin, an employee working in an office building between the locations of blasts stated that when the first explosion was heard, his office was slightly shaking. “I went to see what was going on and the second explosion went off a couple of seconds later," he said.
He saw the chaotic situation in front his office. "People were pretty panicked down there, the crowd was trying to get away as fast as possible,” he said.
Another witness, Will Ritter, who was only a few blocks away from the location, was preparing a press conference room for the race winner near the Copley Square. “It sounded like a fireworks, then white smoke rise,” Will stated.
Two explosions occured 50 and 100 meters away from the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Two people killed in the accident, one of them is believed to be a suicide bomber. Until now, there is no individual or organization who claims to be responisibile for the bombing.
