TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese appreciated Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto for ensuring the supply of urea fertilizer for Australia amid global geopolitical turmoil. Albanese conveyed this through a post on his X account on Tuesday, April 21, 2026.
Albanese mentioned that he discussed with Prabowo ways to address the conflict in West Asia and its impact on the region, including commodity supply. "I thanked President Prabowo for helping secure more fertiliser for Australia," wrote Albanese via his X account @AlboMP.
Albanese stated that Australia and Indonesia are collaborating to ensure the sustainability of essential commodity supply for both countries. In addition to commodity supply, Albanese mentioned that he and Prabowo also discussed efforts to enhance energy supply chain resilience. "Strong relationship in our region matter more than ever, and our two nations are the closest of friends," Albanese said.
Prabowo Subianto received a phone call from Albanese on Tuesday afternoon, April 21, 2026. According to Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, Albanese appreciated Indonesia's initiative to begin exporting 250,000 tons of urea fertilizer to Australia.
Aside from Australia, said Teddy, Indonesia is also expanding its fertilizer export market by exploring shipments to several other countries. He referred to this as part of Indonesia's strengthening role in the global supply chain. "Some urea fertilizer will also be exported to India, the Philippines, Thailand, and Brazil, with a total export commitment of approximately 1 million tons," Teddy said in his written statement on Tuesday, April 21, 2026.
On the other hand, according to Teddy, the government emphasized that the export policy still maintains the balance of domestic supply. He stated that the government will ensure adequate national production capacity. Currently, he said, national urea production exceeds domestic demand. "According to the Ministry of Agriculture data, total national urea production is 7.8 million tons, and domestic demand is around 6.3 million tons," Teddy said.
