TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s coal production from January to September 2025 reached 584.168 million tons, falling short of this year’s target of 739.674 million tons, according to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM).

“The production trend from January to September has declined, with a 7.4 percent year-on-year drop compared to 2024,” said Surya Herjuna, Director of Coal Business Development at the Directorate General of Mineral and Coal, during the 2nd Coalindo Coal Conference in Jakarta on Wednesday, November 5, 2025.

By comparison, coal production in 2024 exceeded expectations, reaching 836.1 million tons against a target of 710 million tons.

Coal exports also slowed in 2025. From January to September, Indonesia exported 374.415 million tons of coal valued at US$21.76 billion. In 2024, total exports reached 555.34 million tons, worth US$37.77 billion.

“Prices have fluctuated and remain below optimal levels,” Surya noted.

Looking ahead, he predicted a decrease of 20-30 million tons in exports compared to last year. To boost shipments, the government aims to expand coal exports to the Philippines alongside key markets such as India and China.

“The decline in exports does not mean Indonesian coal is in low demand. Global economic conditions are currently influencing the market,” Surya said.

On the domestic front, the realization of the Domestic Market Obligation (DMO) reached 166.78 million tons in 2025, still below the annual target of 239.67 million tons.
