TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Communications and Digital (Komdigi) Meutya Hafid has confirmed that the global gaming platform Roblox will comply with Indonesia's online gaming regulations, particularly those related to age classification and digital safety. The commitment was detailed in an official letter that the minister received from the company.
"We appreciate Roblox's move to affirm their willingness to comply with Indonesian regulations," Hafid said in a written statement on Thursday, September 11, 2025.
The minister stated that the government had previously requested that Roblox comply with domestic regulations for the creative industry. The gaming platform has faced numerous complaints in Indonesia due to the risk it poses to underage users.
The letter from Roblox also outlines a plan to share the results of an economic impact study, highlighting the company's contribution to local developers in the country.
"This demonstrates that constructive dialogue can produce concrete steps to protect Indonesian children while strengthening the digital creative industry ecosystem," said the Golkar Party politician.
The official commitment comes after a series of public concerns. Previously, Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti had stated that Roblox was dangerous due to its violent content, arguing that children are not yet able to distinguish between reality and fiction in the virtual world. The game has also been accused of making children less active and more emotional.
Additionally, the East Kalimantan Regional Police uncovered a case of sexual violence allegedly facilitated by the game. In the incident, a suspect met a 15-year-old girl from Sweden through Roblox and threatened to leak her private photos and videos unless she sent him US$50.
To address these concerns, Roblox, via its official website, has tightened user age verification using video selfies. The company also restricts unfiltered messaging through a feature called "Trusted Connections."
Several other countries have also announced they have blocked or restricted the use of Roblox due to similar concerns about children's digital safety. These countries include Qatar, Oman, China, and Turkey.
