TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Monday morning, August 12, 2025, precisely at 08:39 a.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB). The volcanic eruption, located at the border of the Agam and Tanah Datar regencies, lasted for 34 seconds. "The grayish-white ash column tilted northeast," said Mount Marapi Monitoring Post Officer Ahmad Rifai in an official statement shortly after the eruption.

This time, Mount Marapi spewed volcanic ash up to 1.6 kilometers high from the summit, approximately 4,491 meters above sea level. Seismogram data indicates that this eruption had a maximum amplitude of 30.4 millimeters. According to Rifai, volcanic activity persisted as officers were preparing their official report on the eruption.

With Mount Marapi remaining at volcanic alert Level II, the residents of Agam and Tanah Datar, as well as tourists, are urged to avoid a 3-kilometer radius from the Verbeek Crater. Rifai also warned communities along the rivers originating from Mount Marapu to "beware of subsequent volcanic mudflows, especially during the rainy season," he said.

The monitoring post officer also urged the public not to spread unverified information. "Do not be swayed by hoaxes. Just follow the directions of the local government," he added.

Mount Marapi, perched between the Agam and Tanah Datar regencies, is one among the numerous active volcanoes in Indonesia. The mountain has erupted several times with varying intensities throughout 2025.
