TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Apple is reportedly set to introduce a new model to the iPhone 17 line: the iPhone 17 Air. The iPhone 17 Air is said to feature a titanium frame. This information was conveyed by Apple analyst Jeff Pu in an investor note with research firm GF Securities this week.
According to Pu, as reported by MacRumors, the three models in the iPhone 17 series—the iPhone 17, the iPhone 17 Pro, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max—will use an aluminium frame instead. Therefore, the iPhone 17 Air will be the only new model this year to use titanium as its material.
Surprisingly, the iPhone 17 Air uses titanium, considering the device is rumoured to be thin and light. Aluminium is lighter than titanium. However, titanium is indeed stronger, so it is likely chosen to maintain the strength of the ultra-thin body of the iPhone 17 Air.
Prior to this, another Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, mentioned that the iPhone 17 Air will combine titanium and aluminium materials. This means there is still a possibility that the device will use a combination of the two materials.
Since the launch of the iPhone X in 2017, Apple has consistently used a stainless steel or titanium frame for its high-end iPhone models. If Pu's prediction that the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will again use aluminium proves correct, this will be a significant change in Apple's design strategy.
Here are Jeff Pu's predictions for the iPhone 17 frame materials:
iPhone 17: Aluminium
iPhone 17 Air: Titanium
iPhone 17 Pro: Aluminium
iPhone 17 Pro Max: Aluminium
Meanwhile, for the iPhone 16 series:
iPhone 16: Aluminium
iPhone 16 Plus: Aluminium
iPhone 16 Pro: Titanium
iPhone 16 Pro Max: Titanium
Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 17 series at its official launch event in September.
