SMEs Minister Comments on USTR Allegation of Counterfeits at Jakarta's Mangga Dua

April 26, 2025 | 08:41 am

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian SMEs Minister, Maman Abdurrahman, commented on the United States Trade Representative (USTR) document, accusing the Mangga Dua market of being a counterfeit hub. Maman stated that law enforcement agencies could handle any suspected law violations that potentially occur in this case.

''Anything suspected of involving a criminal violation related to the use and sale of counterfeit goods falls under the jurisdiction of law enforcement,'' Maman told reporters at the Smesco Indonesia building in South Jakarta on Friday, April 25, 2025.

However, Maman did not remain silent about the USTR report. He stated that the issue of counterfeiting can be addressed with the Task Force for the Protection and Empowerment of SMEs, which is currently being developed by his ministry. ''If there is counterfeiting and the like, the task force can immediately take action,'' Maman said.

Maman conveyed that this task force is in the initial communication stage with relevant ministries and agencies to anticipate the development of the counterfeit goods market in the country. He wants SMEs to thrive with genuine local products without being enticed by imitation products of global trademarks.

The USTR report is outlined in the National Trade Estimate Report on Foreign Trade Barriers 2025, published on March 31, 2025. The most common counterfeit goods have also led to an increase in import tariffs by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The USTR highlights the lack of Indonesian government protection of intellectual property, as shown by the prevalence of counterfeit cases and copyright infringement. Moreover, the report focuses on the Mangga Dua Market in Jakarta, which is listed in the Review of Notorious Markets for Counterfeiting and Piracy 2024.

On the other hand, the Head of Trade Policy at the Ministry of Trade, Rusmin Amin, stated that he has not received directions to follow up on the allegations of the sale of counterfeit and illegal products at the Mangga Dua Market.

''That's just an issue from outside, we also haven't received directions from the top,'' said the Director General of Consumer Protection and Trade Compliance of the Ministry of Trade, Rusmin Amin, when met in the Cikini area, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, April 24, 2025.
