Brazil Captain Marquinhos Apologizes After Humiliating 1-4 Defeat to Argentina

March 27, 2025 | 03:39 pm

TEMPO.CO, JakartaBrazil captain Marquinhos issued an apology to fans following a crushing 1-4 defeat against Argentina in the CONMEBOL World Cup 2026 qualifier.

The match, held at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, marked another setback for the five-time World Cup champions, who have managed just one win in their last four matches.

Marquinhos urged his teammates to recover quickly from the disappointing performance. "What we did here today can't happen again," he told Brazilian TV Globo, as quoted by Reuters. "It's hard to talk about it in the heat of the moment... It's embarrassing.

Argentina dominated the match, with goals from Julian Alvarez in the 4th minute, Enzo Fernandez in the 12th, Alexis Mac Allister in the 37th, and Giuliano Simeone in the 71st. Brazil’s lone response came from Matheus Cunha in the 26th minute.

Marquinhos admitted that Brazil started poorly and struggled against a confident Argentina side. "We started the game very badly, far below what we could do and they're on a great run of confidence. They knew how to play smart ... I'm sorry for our fans," he said.

The defeat further eroded trust in Brazil's manager, Dorival Junior, who has won only seven of his 16 matches since taking charge in early 2024. However, Marquinhos defended the coach, insisting the team must take collective responsibility.

"It's not just the coach's fault... It's the players' fault too. There's no secret formula in football where you make a choice and it works out. We can all do better. We have to share the blame. It's about understanding the moment and being humble," said the Paris Saint-Germain defender.

While Argentina has already secured a spot in the 2026 World Cup, Brazil faces a battle to guarantee direct qualification. They currently sit fourth in the South American standings with 21 points, just six points ahead of Venezuela, who occupy the inter-confederation play-off spot.

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni praised his team’s dominant performance.

"We played as a team and that's why we minimized Brazil. We played at the highest level. We have to keep proving ourselves, but knowing that it won't always be like this," Scaloni said.
