TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - WhatsApp has announced that it will limit the number of broadcast messages sent by individual and business users to reduce spam on the platform.
This will be tested in the coming weeks by setting a monthly limit on sending. Meta gives an example of up to 30 messages per month restriction, although this limit may change during the testing period.
"If individual users want to send more messages to a large number of people, they could use Status updates or channels," Meta said, cited from a TechCrunch report on Friday, March 21, 2025.
In addition to individual users, WhatsApp also plans to impose limits on business accounts. Up to this point, WhatsApp Business accounts could send broadcast messages for free and without limits. However, the company will soon introduce a paid version with additional tools.
Meta will test specific broadcast messages for product updates or holiday promotions in the coming months. Business accounts will also have the feature to schedule broadcast messages.
During the testing period, businesses will get 250 specific broadcast messages for free, after that, they will have to pay to send additional messages. Currently, there is no information regarding the price of the service.
WhatsApp has also taken steps to reduce spam, such as limiting the number of marketing messages users can receive daily. Last year, the company began testing an ''unsubscribe'' feature that allows users to opt out of receiving certain companies' messages without blocking the account.
In its quarterly financial report, Meta highlighted that WhatsApp Business has become an important asset with continuously increasing revenue.
The WhatsApp Business app is available for free, with features like business profile pages and product catalogs. However, it charges for various business messages sent via the WhatsApp API.
In addition to the broadcast message system changes, Meta will also update the WhatsApp Business app logo. This step is part of the company's strategy to continue developing business features on its platform.
