TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman has welcomed the interest of Qatari agricultural companies in investing in Indonesia's dairy industry. The investment aims to boost the milk supply and support the country's free nutritious meal program initiated by President-elect Prabowo Subianto.
“Baladna (a Qatari company) is ready to contribute to the free nutritious meal program by investing in dairy farming in Indonesia to meet domestic milk needs,” Amran said in a written statement in Jakarta on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, as reported by Antara.
The company's investment plans emerged during a discussion between the Minister of Agriculture and the Indonesian Ambassador to Qatar, Ridwan Hassan, which took place at Doha International Airport while the Minister was in transit to Brazil.
During the discussion, Amran emphasized Indonesia's goal of achieving food self-sufficiency. In response, Baladna expressed its capability of producing two million tons of milk per year. This prompted the Minister to give the green light to the company's investment plans.
With an annual production capacity of two million tons of milk, Amran hoped to significantly reduce Indonesia's reliance on milk imports. This aligns with the Agricultural Blueprint, which aims for milk self-sufficiency by 2029.
After a brief rest in the VIP room at Doha airport, the Agriculture Minister continued his journey to Sao Paulo, Brazil. The trip was expected to take 15 hours.
In Brazil, the Agriculture Minister will participate in the G-20 Agriculture Ministerial Meeting on Thursday, September 12, 2024, representing Indonesia as a speaker.
At the meeting, Amran will highlight Indonesia's achievements in the agricultural sector and engage in three bilateral meetings with the Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Minister of Agriculture of Argentina, and the Minister of Agriculture of Brazil.
