Following South Korea and K-Wave, Indonesia Requires Creative Economy for Soft Diplomacy: Ministry

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Coordinator for ASEAN, Intra and Extra Regional Affairs in the Center for Strategic Policy at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Joannes Ekaprasetya Tandjung, stresses that Indonesia, with its abundance of culture and traditions, requires the creative economy sector as the vehicle for soft diplomacy through the Indonesian Wave. This, he said, is akin to what South Korea does with the Korean Wave (K-Wave/Hallyu).

“To achieve the 2045 Golden Indonesia goal, will we keep depending on coal and fossil fuel (for trade)? Or will we deepen our relations with other countries based on education, culture, and creativity?” he remarked.

Joannes, the former Coordinator for Creative Economy and Digital at the Indonesian Embassy in Seoul, is optimistic that the Indonesian Wave will be as massive as the K-Wave.

“As long as we employ the correct strategy, people, and government officials. Because I will admit, we can’t work in the creative and digital sectors without passion,” Joannes said.

Quoting the official website of South Korea’s cultural promotions, K-Wave emerged in late '90s when What is Love, a TV drama, was aired by a Chinese major state broadcaster. In the early 2000s, the Hallyu wave spread through another East Asian country, Japan. Three decades past, the Korean Wave reached various corners of the world, including Indonesia.

According to Joannes, Indonesia must work with South Korea, considering the country’s success in spreading its creative works overseas. Not only through television drama, but music, culture, and food.

One of the collaborative paths to take is through inter-university cooperation, to follow South Korea’s steps on formal education for artists. “Several universities, or similar higher education institutions, focus on birthing mature artists, one of which is the Seoul Institute of the Arts, located in Ansan. Institut Kesenian Jakarta (IKJ) has signed an MoU with the Seoul Institute of the Arts (SIA),” Joannes revealed.
