TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A Trigana Air plane, with the registration number PK YSP ATR 42-500, skidded off the runway at Stevanus Rumbewas Serui Airport in Yapen Islands Regency, Papua Province, on Monday, September 9, 2024.
Yapen Islands Police Chief Commissioner Ardyan Ukie Hercahyo confirmed that the plane, carrying 42 passengers and 6 crew members, skidded approximately 1,200 meters off the runway.
“Thank God, all passengers and crew members are safe and have been rushed to Serui Hospital for medical examinations,” Commissioner Ardyan said on Monday, September 9, 2024.
The plane was preparing for takeoff to Jayapura when the incident occurred. Initial investigations suggest a possible technical issue that may have contributed to the plane deviating from the runway. However, further investigation is necessary to determine the precise cause of the accident.
“We are conducting a thorough investigation into this incident and coordinating with relevant authorities to prevent similar occurrences in the future,” Ardyan added.
The police have also contacted aviation authorities and technicians to assess the condition of the Trigana Air plane and the runway. A comprehensive investigation is expected to reveal the root cause of the plane skidding and ensure appropriate corrective measures are implemented.
