TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno Marsudi, at the International Sustainability Forum (ISF) 2024 today, underscored the nation's drive toward a sustainable future and its leadership in global energy transition and sustainable development efforts.
In her speech, Minister Retno highlighted the rising global investment in clean energy, noting a 17% increase last year, which brought the total to USD 1.7 trillion. The electric vehicle (EV) sector saw a significant surge, with investments reaching USD 634 billion—nearly five times the amount invested in 2020. She emphasized that renewable energy is the future fuel and a major driver of economic growth, positioning Indonesia to take part in the global shift toward a low-carbon economy.
“Pursuing a sustainable future is a shared responsibility that involves everyone from individuals to large organizations. And I do believe, all of us here are important stakeholders in the pursuit towards low-carbon economy to ensure a healthier planet and a better quality of life for ourselves and also for our future generations,” said Retno.
She stressed that the current level of energy transition investment is not enough to meet net-zero targets by mid-century. To address this, Indonesia is pushing for sustainable diplomacy, advocating for the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Minister Retno outlined three key priorities: investing in green technology, leveraging the blue economy, and enhancing carbon absorption. She mentioned Indonesia's significant initiatives, including the launch of the Blue Economy Roadmap 2023-2045 and its role as a co-initiator of the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC). Additionally, she highlighted Indonesia’s ability to absorb emissions, thanks to its vast tropical rainforests and its record-low deforestation rates.
