TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Onward Indonesia Coalition (KIM) Plus prospective gubernatorial candidate for Jakarta, Ridwan Kamil, spoke about President-elect Prabowo Subianto’s request for him to run in the Jakarta gubernatorial election.
"Mr. Prabowo asked (me) to look after Jakarta," said Ridwan Kamil when met by reporters at the Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka Young Voters National Winning Team (TKN) or TKN Fanta headquarters, Menteng, Central Jakarta on Monday, September 2, 2024.
Ridwan Kamil admitted that he had considered running in the West Java election but was unable to refuse Prabowo’s request.
Moreover, Ridwan Kamil said his party, the Golkar Party, approved of the Gerindra Party’s chair request. "To be honest, West Java is my comfort zone. However, Mr. Prabowo asked me to manage Jakarta. And, the Golkar Party-since it’s part of the coalition-assigned me to it. So, that’s it, I’m ready,” he said.
Ridwan Kamil said Prabowo entrusted him with a program if he was elected governor of Jakarta, namely building houses in the center of the city. According to him, Prabowo highlighted the amount of Jakarta youths with housing difficulties.
"But, the land is limited. We will try to build housing on markets, stations, and former government offices that have moved to the IKN (Nusantara Capital City," said Ridwan Kamil.
Ridwan Kamil along with former Secretary General of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) Suswono are backed by KIM Plus in the Jakarta gubernatorial election. They will face off against the PDIP’s Pramono Anung-Rano Karno and the independent pair Dharma Pongrekun-Kun Wardana.
