TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Metro Police is preparing traffic engineering for Pope Francis' visit to Indonesia. All roads that will be used by the Pope's retinue will be temporarily closed.

Sr. Comr. Latif Usman, director of traffic at the Jakarta Metro Police, said that this set of preparations is being done strictly because Pope Francis is on the same level as the head of state.

"This means that when he goes from one place to another, there will be full security. The whole route will be cleared," he said on Friday, August 30, 2024.

Latif explained that after Pope Francis' party passes through the temporarily closed roads, the roads will be reopened as normal.

Some of the routes that will be closed are from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to the Vatican Embassy on Sept. 3, 2024. Road closures will also be implemented when the convoy departs from the Vatican Embassy to the Presidential Palace on September 4, 2024.

Road closures will also be enforced when the Pope departs from the Vatican Embassy to the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium (GBK) area on September 5, 2024.

"The route that will be taken will be temporarily closed and we will divert road users to other paths," he said.

Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church, will visit Indonesia from September 3 to 6, coinciding with the International Sustainability Forum (ISF). This will be the Pope's first visit to Indonesia.

During his visit, Pope Francis is scheduled to meet with members of the public, in addition to his meeting with President Joko Widodo.

To secure Pope Francis' visit to Indonesia, the Indonesian Police will deploy 4,520 personnel, consisting of 1,077 officers from the National Police Headquarters and 3,443 from the Jakarta Metro Police.
