TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The deputy chief of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Alexander Marwata said the agency is authorized to ask for clarification on the luxurious facilities and luxury goods belonging to Kaesang Pangarep and his wife Erina Gudono. According to Alex, Kaesang is a family member of a state administrator and must be treated equally before the law.
“We uphold the principle of equality before the law,” said Alexander Marwata in a press conference at KPK in Jakarta on Tuesday, August 27, 2024.
The Indonesian public recently spotlighted a video showing President Joko Widodo’s son and daughter-in-law exiting a private jet while their aide carried their luxury goods.
Responding to this, Alex said KPK has ordered the Gratification Director and the Public Official Asset Declaration Director to request clarification from the president’s son.
Kaesang and Erina Gudono allegedly boarded billions of rupiah worth of a private jet and purchased luxury goods from Hermes, Louis Vuitton, and Dior without inspection at Customs and Excise.
Alex said KPK ordered the two directorates to firmly request clarification from President Jokowi’s youngest son to carry out its duty and answer public suspicion. “This issue has gained public attention and become a public concern so we must be proactive,” Alex said.
According to Alex, the Indonesian people needed to know whether Kaesang Pangarep boarded the private jet with his own money or was gifted due to his father’s position as the country’s number one. “If he used his own money, then there’s no problem. ‘It’s my own money, Sir’, that’s it. That’s what he (Kaesang) must explain,” he said.
