TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Directorate General of Immigration of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) recently just launched a new passport design. From the cover, we can see that the color of the passport is dominantly red with a combination of the color white. So, what about its security features?

“Well, here are the security features, for example. This garuda symbol here, is one of them,” said the Director General of Immigration of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Silmy Karim, after the launch of the new passport design in Central Jakarta on Saturday, August 17, 2024.

He explained that the garuda symbol has a batik design. In addition, the symbol also uses printing technology such as banknotes.

“So it is not easy to counterfeit,” explained Silmy. “Then, if you hold it, it's intaglio, like on money too.”

Quoted from the official website of the Printing Press of the Republic of Indonesia (Peruri), intaglio is a printing technique that produces fine to thick elements. This technique gives a rough impression when touched.

In addition, Silmy said that the new passport design already uses polycarbonate. He then showed the identity section of the passport. Then he explained the two parts that use polycarbonate material on the page.

"Including when, for example, it is highlighted with UV (ultraviolet light), the color changes," said Silmy while highlighting one of the passport pages.

In addition, the design of the new passport also uses three-colored thread. So it will be visible if highlighted with a special light.

“We refer to international standards,” said Silmy.

Furthermore, he explained that the new passport design will officially come into effect on August 17, 2025. The mechanism for switching the old passport design from green to red will be regulated later.
