TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi delivered a special message to Prabowo Subianto when delivering the nation's address at the House of Representatives (DPR) building on Friday, August 16. To his successor, who will soon be inaugurated as president in October 2024, Jokowi verbally handed over his position as head of state.
"Next year, God willing, you will be the one to deliver the state of the nation address," Jokowi said while attending the MPR annual meeting. "Allow me to pass the baton of leadership to Mr. Prabowo Subianto," he told the defense minister.
Jokowi's term ends in two months. This year's speech was the former Solo mayor's last as president.
Jokowi emphasized that Prabowo will directly continue his chain of leadership. He also passed on all the hopes and aspirations of all Indonesians to his colleague, whom he supported in the 2024 presidential election.
In this year's state session, Jokowi apologized to the people and admitted that he and his two deputies, Jusuf Kalla and Ma'ruf Amin, may have missed some goals in leading Indonesia for ten years. The former governor of Jakarta said that two terms was a long time, but not long enough to resolve all the problems of the Indonesian nation.
In total, Jokowi apologized three times. "I know that by this time we have not achieved everything we want to achieve and the final results. Not everything is what each of us, ladies and gentlemen, expected and hoped for."
On Monday, August 12, Jokowi asked Prabowo's commitment to continue state projects, especially the National Capital City (IKN). Three times in front of journalists, Jokowi questioned IKN before Prabowo.
"Pak Jokowi was the one who went through all the trouble (to build IKN). And the one who will enjoy it first is me. That's fate, sir," Prabowo said in response to the president.
