Jeju Air, Starlux Among Five Airlines to Open International Flight Routes in Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Five international airlines will start serving international flights to Indonesia, as confirmed by the Head of the Communication Bureau of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy or Kemenparekraf, I.G.A. Dewi Hendriyani. The five airlines are Jeju Air, Batik Air Malaysia, Air Asia, Starlux, and China Southern Airlines.
"Jeju Air will serve the Seoul-Incheon to Denpasar route seven times per week starting from October 27, 2024," she told Tempo in a written response on Thursday, July 15, 2024.
Batik Air Malaysia opened the Kuala Lumpur-Surabaya and Kuala Lumpur-Lombok routes on July 31, 2024. "As well as the Kuala Lumpur-Padang and Kuala Lumpur-Pekanbaru routes on August 10, 2024," she said.
According to Dewi, Air Asia has opened several international routes, including Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei to Jakarta on August 2, 2024; Kota Kinabalu to Denpasar on August 9, 2024; Phuket to Denpasar on August 10, 2024; and Cairns to Denpasar on August 15, 2024.
"Kota Kinabalu-Manado starting September 1, 2024, and Kuala Lumpur-Labuan Bajo which will start on September 2, 2024," she said.
Meanwhile, Taiwanese airline Starlux is scheduled to open a new route from Taipei to Jakarta on September 1, 2024.
"Last, China Southern Airlines will reopen the Shenzhen-Denpasar route starting August 19, 2024," she said.
Opening the international routes is intended to connect Indonesia with major markets that contribute to some of the biggest foreign arrivals in Indonesia. Those include Malaysia, Australia, China, Thailand, the Republic of Korea and Taiwan.
"It is expected to help Indonesia reach the foreign tourist arrivals target in 2024 with 14.3 million people," said Dewi.
It was previously reported that Scoot Airline will launch two new destinations along with two new aircraft units. The new destinations are Kertajati in Indonesia and Melaka in Malaysia.
Scoot Chief Executive Officer, Leslie Thng said the airline has seen a great demand for Southeast Asian destinations since it launched its Embraer E190-E2 aircraft in May 2024.
