TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh has issued a travel advisory for its citizens to avoid crowds and demonstrations following widespread protests that led to the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The embassy has raised its alert level from three to two due to deteriorating security conditions.
“Considering safety and security, Indonesian citizens in Bangladesh are urged to increase their vigilance, reduce non-essential outdoor activities, and avoid crowds and demonstration locations,” said the Indonesian representative on Monday evening, August 5, 2024.
The protests erupted over a government quota system for government jobs favoring families of veterans of the 1971 war of independence, which was deemed benefiting Hasina’s allies, the Awami League.
The protests escalated into an attempt to overthrow Hasina, which was met with a violent crackdown by authorities that left some 250 people dead and thousands more injured.
Indonesian citizens are advised to stay informed, maintain communication with the embassy, and postpone non-essential travel to Bangladesh until conditions improve.
In case of emergencies, Indonesian citizens in Bangladesh should contact the Indonesian Embassy's hotline at (+880) 1614444552.
