TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Canada issued a travel advisory on Saturday, August 3, 2024, urging its citizens to avoid all travel to Israel due to the escalating conflict in the Middle East and the unpredictable security situation in the region.
“Avoid all travel due to the ongoing regional armed conflict and the unpredictable security situation,” the Canadian Government said in a statement.
In response to the deteriorating conditions, numerous airlines have suspended flights to Israel and Lebanon. Several countries, including Indonesia, have issued similar travel warnings amid the recent escalation of conflict in the region.
On Sunday, August 4, 2024, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs advised its citizens against traveling to Lebanon, Iran, and Israel until security improves. Indonesians already in the region were urged to exercise heightened vigilance and follow the guidance of Indonesian representatives. Those in Lebanon were specifically advised to depart immediately.
The assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31, 2024, has significantly exacerbated tensions. Both Hamas and Iran have accused Israel of the killing, while Israel has not confirmed or denied involvement. This incident followed the killing of Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in a suspected Israeli airstrike in the southern suburbs of Beirut.
Fear of an all-out war between Israel and Hezbollah has grown as both sides engage in cross-border attacks. Tensions escalated dramatically after Israel massacred nearly 39,500 people since the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas.
