IKN Area to Be Transformed into Living Museum Inspired by Bali

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Nusantara Capital City (IKN) Authority is planning to transform local wisdom in East Kalimantan into a tourist village and living museum, mirroring the success of Bali. “We prepare to create a tourist village that doubles as a living museum, where local wisdom remains prominently displayed,” said Alimudin, Deputy for Social and Cultural Empowerment of the IKN Authority (OIKN), at the 2024 ASN Festival in Jakarta on Saturday, August 3, 2024.

He explained that the OIKN aims to convert villages, particularly in Penajam Paser Utara, into living museums that captivate tourists. He emphasized that this concept preserves and showcases local wisdom within the developing tourist village.

“We are preparing to turn a tourist village into a living museum, where local wisdom can still be clearly visible," he said.

One focus is the Paser Tribe, an indigenous group residing in East Kalimantan, especially Paser Regency. Alimudin stressed that the OIKN is committed to safeguarding the Paser Tribe's existence and cultural heritage amidst the new capital development.

To attract tourists, the authority plans to adopt the living museum concept seen in Karangasem, Bali, where visitors can immerse themselves in the daily lives of the local community.

In this process, preserving local wisdom is a core focus for the OIKN. A recent cultural discussion emphasized the importance of safeguarding local culture and the broader archipelago's heritage within the IKN context.

The Paser Tribe's riverfront settlement presented a challenge. However, the community can maintain its residence through revised flood control project designs. “We're undertaking various projects, including flood control. While initial plans involved relocation, design modifications now allow the Paser Tribe to stay,” Alimudin explained.

He added that the IKN is surrounded by indigenous communities, especially in Kutai Kartanegara, including the Dayak tribe in the northern region. Community participation is essential to the city's planning and development. 

The IKN's development process prioritizes community participation from the outset. The OIKN engages local communities as survey teams to identify challenges and ensure their involvement in the development journey. “Head of the IKN Authority, Mr. Basuki, won’t initiate construction before addressing social aspects. This is what we do in IKN.”

Although acknowledging the challenges of unifying diverse perspectives, Alimudin expressed confidence that the IKN will be a harmonious location capable of effectively managing potential differences.
