TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia has strongly condemned the assassination of Hamas Political Bureau Chief Ismail Haniyeh, which occurred in Tehran, Iran, on Wednesday, July 31, 2024. The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the killing as a "provocative act" with the potential to escalate regional tensions.
“Indonesia condemns the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, Head of the Hamas Political Bureau in Tehran, Iran on July 31, 2024,” the ministry stated on social media platform X on Wednesday.
Hamas announced that Haniyeh was killed in an attack while attending the inauguration of Iranian President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian. The Palestinian group blamed Israel for the killing, although Israel has not claimed responsibility.
“Brother, leader, mujahid Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the movement, died in a Zionist strike on his headquarters in Tehran after he participated in the inauguration of the new (Iranian) president,” Hamas said in a statement, as quoted by Al Arabiya.
Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed Haniyeh's death, stating that his residence in Tehran was attacked, resulting in his death and that of a bodyguard.
“The residence of Ismail Haniyeh, head of the political office of Hamas Islamic Resistance, was hit in Tehran, and as a result of this incident, he and one of his bodyguards were martyred,” the IRGC said in its statement.
Haniyeh, who had lived in Qatar, had become a prominent figure in Hamas' international diplomacy amid Israel's ongoing attacks on the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023. His assassination is feared to hinder ceasefire negotiations between Hamas and Israel.
The Indonesian Foreign Ministry emphasized that the killing was a "provocative action" that could exacerbate regional conflict and undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Indonesia's neighbor, Malaysia, also denounced the killing, calling for a swift and thorough investigation and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
