TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan ensured President-elect Prabowo Subianto’s administration will continue the carbon capture and storage (CCS/CCUS) project.
According to Luhut, the project will proceed no matter who the next Indonesian president is. "I believe President Prabowo will also approve the project," said Luhut on Wednesday, July 31, 2024.
On several occasions, Luhut explained that two carbon capture and storage projects are underway in Indonesia with fairly large carbon storage capacities.
One of the projects is Tangguh CCUS in Bintuni Bay, West Papua, which has a carbon storage capacity of 1.8 gigatons of carbon dioxide or CO2.
The Tangguh project, he said, has the potential to become Indonesia’s first CCS hub which captures and stores carbon not only domestically from various industries in Indonesia but also overseas.
The second project is a collaboration between Pertamina and ExxonMobil; the Sunda-Asri CCS Hub. It has the potential to become another CCS hub in western Indonesia to potentially store carbon from Singapore and domestic industries that have difficulty breaking down emissions.
Pertamina and ExxonMobil both manage BP Tangguh and Sunda-Asri. Luhut explained the investment value in Tangguh and Sunda-Asri could amount to US$1.2 billion.
According to Luhut, Indonesia has 15 potential CCS projects with an onstream target in 2026-2030. Luhut said Indonesia currently has 630 Giga tons of CCS potential.
Luhut conveyed this information after attending the 2nd International & Indonesia Carbon Capture and Storage (IICCS) Forum 2024. The forum, which lasts two days on July 31 and August 1, highlights the importance of implementing CCS technology in achieving sustainable energy commitments.
He said the two CCUS pilot projects in Indonesia are expected to bring new investment by creating new jobs and boosting technology transfer through international cooperation and a strong commitment to technological innovation. "We can achieve global emission reduction targets and realize a cleaner and more sustainable future in Indonesia," he said.
